My buddies and I bought an old cargo van for $300 when we were in high school and this is what we did with it...
In September of 2010, Jennilyn and I decided to pack up our belonging and cram them into a storage unit. We then set off in our mini-van crammed pack full of our family of four and enough supplies, equipment, and toys to keep us busy for 2.5 months.
Ever since I started college, I desired to become a hermit and live in a small cabin in the nook of a mountainous canyon.
Frozen water pipes and stolen climbing gear. What do these two things have in common?
The boys started out the trip with the van bed as their bunk. After 2 1/2 weeks, we moved them into our tent. I got sick of waking up, putting on my coat, and walking over to the van whenever Fisher needed a drink of water or his arm tickled.
Rock climbing is an addiction. It’s like golf.
Within 2 months, from Sept 17 to Nov 29, Jennilyn and I were able to polish off 84 routes in Idaho, Utah and California. The routes and different rock types were very educational and fun. Having a 4.5 and 2.5 year old at the base of each route also made it an adventure.
“This is the most fun I’ve had since our climbing gear was stolen.”
I put together a quick video of me doing a really fun route on Prophesy Wall in St George, UT.
Can the homeless celebrate holidays?
Being homeless and hopping from one base-camp to another every week or two allows for utilizing some nifty tricks to be comfortable and save money.
For $26 we get to sleep in bed for one night, shower, look in a mirror, watch TV, flush our human waste, control the temperature, access to the internet, dip in the pool, watch free circus acts, and more. Granted, we could have just camped this night for free...but this is well worth it.
4 month on the road? Yea...you need to be comfortable.
These crags are sharp limestone that is either wicked slabby or nicely overhung. It is so nice to be on some sick sport climbs on some hard and dependable rock.
My 4 year old is what I like to call a “Super Duper Hiker-Dude.
What? Fisher fell into a cave?
